The China Beach Bathhouse is tucked away in a cozy cove between Baker Beach and Lands End in the City of San Francisco’s Sea Cliff neighborhood. Originally constructed in 1957 as a beach motel, a $20 million renovation was approved as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area's 50th anniversary in 2022. The renovated facilities now serve as headquarters for the Golden Gate National Recreation Area Ocean Rescue Patrol.
The renovation included the rebuilding of the retaining walls that surround the building and was proceeded by ADA accessibility improvements to the parking lot, and finally, indoor washrooms, private changing booths, and showers. Included as part of the scope was the following:Bathhouse Rehabilitation and Associated Site Work
- New telecom/data system sufficient for small office use
- New fire suppression, fire detection and alarm systems to meet current codes
- New bathroom designs for the building interior, and public bathrooms and outdoor showers accessible from building exterior
- New interior and exterior lighting and electrical systems, controls and distribution design
- New mechanical systems and controls design for anticipated ventilation, exhaust, equipment, bathroom facilities, special use spaces and service areas
- New security systems
- Site electrical survey
- Abandoning existing gas utility
