Founded in 1864, Gallaudet University is a federally chartered, private university, with an educational curriculum that is specifically tailored to meet the needs of deaf and hard of hearing students. The university is known globally as a leader in the educational advances of hearing impaired, drawing the attention of applicants across the United States and over 25 countries worldwide.

In recent years, The Office of Campus Design & Planning has addressed the need for numerous renovation and improvement projects through the existing campus. Among which were the outdated science and lab facilities within Hall Memorial Building, home of the University’s Science, Technology, and Math (STM) Department.

The first phase included the interior renovation of various science labs and support spaces on the fourth floor north wing of HMB. Additionally, a new pedestrian walkway was constructed between the north and south wings of the fourth floor, creating a link between lab spaces and a new student collaboration area.

The second and third phases of work encompassed the interior renovation of the fourth floor south wing of HMB, as well as the renovation of science lab spaces throughout the entire third floor. A new, open stairway bridges the third and fourth floors, creating a sense of unity between the newly renovated space.

Lastly, during the final/post-construction stage of the project, Interface provided commissioning services for the entire renovation area to ensure that the facility runs at optimal energy efficiency and meets the District of Columbia’s strict building guidelines for sustainability.
